Hypnotic Glove Anesthesia Induces Skin Temperature Changes in Adult Volunteers: A Prospective Controlled Pilot Study

Abstract

This study assessed whether a focal glove hypnotic hand anesthesia induced thermal changes within the area of hypnotic protection. Skin temperature of hands, wrists, and forearms was continuously recorded bilaterally using infrared thermography in 30 volunteers. Thermal recordings were obtained prior to, after glove building, and after its withdrawal, with the contralateral upper limb serving as control side. Analgesic glove induced a statistically significant difference in temperature variation within the hand, wrist, and distal forearm on the glove side, compared with proximal forearm and control side. Hypnotic glove analgesia provides significant changes in skin temperature within protected areas. Further research is required to determine the mechanisms of these objective changes induced by hypnosis.

Abstract: Diese Studie untersuchte, ob eine fokale hypnotische Handanästhesie Temperaturänderungen innerhalb des Gebietes des hypnotischen Schutzes induzierte. Bei 30 Freiwilligen wurde die Hauttemperatur der Hände, Handgelenke und Unterarme an beiden Armen mittels Infrarot-Thermographie kontinuierlich aufgezeichnet. Die Temperaturen wurden zu Beginn, nach Etablierung eines Handschuhs und nach Aufhebung aufgenommen. Dabei diente die kontralaterale obere Extremität als Kontrollgröße. Der analgetische Handschuh induzierte einen statistisch signifikanten Unterschied bezüglich der Temperaturveränderungen bei der Hand, dem Handgelenk und dem Unterarm auf der Handschuh-Seite verglichen mit dem proximalen Unterarm und der Kontrollseite. Hypnotische Handschuh-Anästhesie erzeugt signifikante Unterschiede der Hauttemperatur innerhalb der geschützten Bereiche. Es ist weitere Forschung nötig, um die Mechanismen dieser objektiven Veränderungen durch Hypnose bestimmen zu können.

Résumé: Cette étude a cherché à savoir si une anesthésie par gant hypnotique focale de la main provoque des changements thermiques dans l’aire de protection hypnotique. La température de la peau des mains, des poignets et des avant-bras de 30 volontaires a été enregistrée bilatéralement en continu à l’aide de la thermographie infrarouge. Des enregistrements thermiques ont été obtenus avant l’induction du gant hypnotique, après l’induction du gant hypnotique, et après le retrait de l’induction, le membre supérieur controlatéral servant de contrôle. Le gant analgésique a produit une différence statistiquement significative dans la variation de la température de la main, du poignet et de l’avant-bras distal du côté du gant, comparativement à l’avant-bras proximal et au membre de contrôle. L’analgésie procurée par le gant hypnotique entraîne des changements significatifs de la température de la peau dans les zones protégées. D’autres recherches seront nécessaires pour déterminer les mécanismes de ces changements objectifs induits par l’hypnose.

Resumen: Este estudio evaluó si una anestesia hipnótica de guante, focalizada en la mano, induce cambios térmicos en el área de protección hipnótica. Se registró continuamente la temperatura dérmica de manos, muñecas y antebrazos bilateralmente mediante termografía infrarroja en 30 voluntarios. Los registros termales se obtuvieron antes de, después de la construcción del guante, y después de su retiro, con la extremidad superior contralateral como el lado control. La inducción de la anestesia de guante produjo variaciones en temperatura estadísticamente significativas en la mano, muñeca y antebrazo distal del lado del guante, en comparación con el antebrazo proximal y el lado control. La anestesia hipnótica de guante produce cambios significativos en la temperatura dérmica dentro de las áreas protegidas. Se requiere más investigación para determinar los mecanismos de estos cambios objetivos inducidos por la hipnosis.
