German Norms of the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A (HGSHS:A) and Proposal of a 5-Item Short-Version (HGSHS-5:G)

ABSTRACT

The Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A (HGSHS:A), is commonly used to test hypnotizability. There is still some controversy about what exactly hypnotizability is and whether and how it can be measured, especially by the HGSHS:A. Furthermore, a wider clinical use is limited, requiring a testing time of more than 1 hour. We analyzed the German HGSHS:A version for its factorial structure, item contribution, and item difficulty based on test data from six studies, including 1276 persons, to propose a shorter version of the HGSHS:A. We hereby present a 5-item version of the HGSHS:A (HGSHS-5:G), consisting of the challenge items, that was compared with an 11-item version (highly variable posthypnotic amnesia omitted). Age- and gender-specific norms was generated. The HGSHS-5: G showed high validity, reliability, and classification agreement. It reduces test time to 30 minutes thus facilitating wider use of hypnotizability testing.

Zusammenfassung: Die Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A (HGSHS:A) wird häufig zur Testung der Hypnotisierbarkeit eingesetzt. Es ist noch immer in der Diskussion, was man genau unter Hypnotisierbarkeit versteht und ob bzw. wie man sie messen kann, auch im Hinblick auf die HGSHS:A. Darüber hinaus ist ein breiterer klinischer Einsatz durch die Durchführungszeit von mehr als einer Stunde begrenzt. Wir haben die deutsche Fassung der HGSHS:A hinsichtlich der Faktorenstruktur, der Items und der Itemschwierigkeit analysiert. Die Datenbasis der Untersuchung zur Erstellung einer Kurzfassung mit 5 Items umfasst 6 Studien, die insgesamt 1276 Versuchspersonen beinhalten. Damit präsentieren wir eine 5-Item-Version der HGSHS:A (HGSHS-5:G), die aus den Challenge-Items besteht und die mit der 11-Item-Version verglichen wird (das wenig reliable Item zur posthypnotischen Amnesie wurde ausgelassen). Alters- und geschlechtsspezifische Normen wurden errechnet. Die HGSHS-5:G zeigt sich hoch valide, reliabel und mit einer ausreichenden Übereinstimmung der Klassifikation von Hypnotisierbarkeit. Zudem reduziert sie die Testzeit auf 30 Minuten, was einen breiteren Einsatz in der Testung der Hypnotisierbarkeit ermöglicht.

Résumé: L’échelle de sensibilité hypnotique du groupe Harvard, forme A (HGSHS: A), est couramment utilisée pour tester l’hypnotisabilité. Il existe encore une certaine controverse sur ce qu’est exactement l’hypnotisabilité et si et comment elle peut être mesurée, en particulier par le HGSHS: A. De plus, une utilisation clinique plus large est limitée, nécessitant un temps de test de plus d’une heure. Nous avons analysé le HGSHS allemand: une version pour sa structure factorielle, sa contribution et sa difficulté sur la base des données de test de 6 études, dont 1276 personnes, pour proposer une version plus courte du HGSHS: A. Nous présentons ici une version à 5 éléments du HGSHS: A (HGSHS-5: G), constituée des éléments de défi, qui a été comparée à une version à 11 éléments (amnésie posthypnotique très variable omise). Des normes spécifiques à l’âge et au sexe ont été générées. Le HGSHS-5: G a montré une validité, une fiabilité et un accord de classification élevés. Il réduit le temps de test à 30 minutes facilitant ainsi une utilisation plus large des tests d’hypnotisabilité.

Resumen: La Escala Grupal Harvard de Susceptibilidad Hipnótica, Forma A (HGSHS:A) es comúnmente utilizada para evaluar hipnotizabilidad. Aún existe algo de controversia entre lo que es exactamente la hipnotizabilidad y si se puede medir y cómo, especialmente por la HGSHS:A. Adicionalmente, el uso clínico de la escala es limitado, ya que requiere un tiempo de aplicación mayor a una hora. Analizamos la estructura factorial, contribución de reactivos y dificultad de reactivos de la versión alemana de la HGSHS:A con base en 6 estudios, incluyendo 1276 personas, para proponer una versión corta de la HGSHS:A. En este artículo presentamos una versión de 5 reactivos de la HGSHS:A (HGSHS-5:G), que consiste en los reactivos de desafío, que se comparó a la versión de 11 reactivos (se omitió la amnesia posthipnótica que era altamente variable). Se generaron datos normativos por edad y sexo. La HGSHS-5:G mostró alta validez, fiabilidad y acuerdo de clasificación. Reduce el tiempo de aplicación a 30 minutos, facilitando un mayor uso de la evaluación hipnótica.
