Persian Norms for The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C)

ABSTRACT

The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C), is the most commonly used measure of hypnotizability. In Persian (Farsi), there was a lack of a valid test for hypnotizability. The norms for different language versions of the SHSS:C are important for evaluating the cross-language validity of the measure and determining the ability to compare research findings using the SHSS:C samples of different languages. In this study, a Persian translation of SHSS:C was administered to 321 Farsi-speaking individuals from the cities Tehran and Mashhad. Then, different parameters of the measure, including the distribution, normality, internal consistency, difficulty, and comparison with other SHSS:C norms, have been evaluated and presented. The results indicated that the Persian SHSS:C has good reliability, which is in line with the other language versions of the scale, and the scores from the Persian SHSS:C are comparable to those of the other language versions.

Zusammenfassung: Die Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C) ist das meistverwendete Maß für Hypnotisierbarkeit. Für die persische Sprache (Farsi) fehlte ein valider Hypnotisierbarkeitstest. Die Normen für unterschiedliche Sprachversionen des SHSS:C sind wichtig, um eine sprachübergreifende Validität des Maßes festzustellen sowie seine Fähigkeit zum Vergleich von Forschungsergebnissen aus SHSS:C Stichproben unterschiedlicher Sprachen zu bestimmen. Für diese Studie wurden 321 Farsi-sprechende Proband*innen aus den Städten Teheran und Mashad mit einer persischen Übersetzung des SHSS:C getestet. Dann wurden verschiedene Parameter des Tests wie Verteilung, Normalverteilung, interne Konsistenz, Schwierigkeit und Vergleich mit anderen SHSS:C Normen ausgewertet und vorgelegt. Die Ergebnisse wiesen auf eine gute Reliabilität des persischen SHSS:C hin, die sich einreiht in die anderen Sprachversionen dieser Skala und die Scores der persischen SHSS:C sind vergleichbar mit jenen anderer Sprachversionen.

Résumé: L’échelle de sensibilité hypnotique de Stanford, forme C (SHSS: C), est la mesure d’hypnotisabilité la plus couramment utilisée. En persan (farsi), il n’y avait pas de test validé d’hypnotisabilité. Les normes des différentes versions linguistiques du SHSS: C sont importantes pour évaluer la validité croisée de la mesure et pour déterminer la capacité à comparer les résultats des recherches à l’aide d’échantillons SHSS: C dans différentes langues. Dans cette étude, une traduction persane du SHSS: C a été administrée à 321 personnes parlant le farsi provenant des villes de Téhéran et Mashhad. Ensuite, différents paramètres de mesure, y compris la distribution, la normalité, la cohérence interne, la difficulté et la comparaison avec d’autres normes SHSS: C, ont été évalués et présentés. Les résultats indiquent que l’échelle persane SHSS: C a une bonne fiabilité, ce qui est conforme avec les autres versions linguistiques de l’échelle, et les scores du Persan SHSS: C sont comparables à ceux des autres versions linguistiques.

Resumen: La Escala Stanford de Susceptibilidad Hipnótica, Forma C (ESSH:C) es el instrumento más utilizado para medir hipnotizabilidad. En persa (Farsi), no existía una prueba válida de hipnotizabilidad. Los datos normativos de distintas versiones de idiomas de la ESSH:C son importantes para evaluar la validez entre idiomas del instrumento y determinar la habilidad para comparar los resultados de investigación utilizando la ESSH:C en muestras con distintos lenguajes. En este estudio, se administró la traducción persa de la ESSH:C a 321 individuos de habla Farsi de las ciudades de Tehran y Mashhad. Posteriormente, distintos parámetros del instrumento, incluyendo su distribución, normalidad, consistencia interna, dificultad y la comparación con otras normas de la ESSH:C se evaluaron y presentaron. Los resultados indican que la versión persa de la ESSH:C tiene buena fiabilidad, al igual que las otras versiones de idiomas de la escala y que las puntuaciones de la versión persa son comparables con las otras versiones de idiomas.
