Semantic Adaptation and Validation of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C, in the Chilean Population

ABSTRACT

One of the difficulties of evaluating hypnotizability in Chile is the limited existence of validated instruments. In this study, the Mexican version of Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C, was semantically adapted and validated. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in 102 Chilean university students. The content validation was performed by 3 experts; the internal consistency was evaluated with KR-20. The difficulty of the items was measured with a difficulty index. The majority of the students were classified with high hypnotizability. The mean score obtained was 7.41 (SD = 1.84). The internal consistency was acceptable (KR-20 = 0.73). The item with the least difficulty was arm lowering, whereas the auditory hallucination was the item with the greatest difficulty. The survey showed metric properties to be considered as a valid and reliable instrument to measure the level of hypnotizability in the Chilean population.

Zusammenfassung: Eine der Schwierigkeiten hinsichtlich der Evaluierung der Hypnotisierbarkeit in Chile betrifft das begrenzte Vorhandensein validierter Instrumente. Für diese Studie wurde die mexikanische Version der Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale Form C semantisch adaptiert und validiert. Mit 102 chilenischen Universitätsstudierenden wurde eine deskriptive Querschnittstudie durchgeführt. Die inhaltliche Validierung nahmen 3 Experten vor, die interne Konsistenz wurde mittels K-20 erhoben. Die Schwierigkeit der Items wurde anhand eines Schwierigkeitsindexes gemessen. Die meisten Studierenden wurden als hoch hypnotisierbar ein gestuft. Der Mittelwert lag bei 7.41 (SD = 1.84). Die interne Konsistenz war akzeptabel (KR-20 = 0.73). Das Item mit der geringsten Schwierigkeit war Armsenken, während auditive Halluzination den höchsten Schwierigkeitsgrad aufwies. Die metrischen Eigenschaften zeigten die Skala als valides und reliables Instrument, um das Hypnotisierbarkeitsniveau in der chilenischen Population zu ermitteln.

Résumé: L’une des difficultés de l’évaluation de l’hypnotisabilité au Chili est l’existence limitée d’instruments validés. Dans cette étude, la version mexicaine de l’Échelle de Sensibilité Hypnotique de Stanford, Forme C, a été sémantiquement adaptée et validée. Une étude descriptive transversale a été menée auprès de 102 étudiants chiliens. La validation du contenu a été réalisée par 3 experts; la cohérence interne a été évaluée avec KR-20. La difficulté des items a été mesurée avec un indice de difficulté. La majorité des étudiants ont été classés comme ayant une hypnotisabilité élevée. Le score moyen obtenu était de 7,41 (ET = 1,84). La cohérence interne était acceptable (KR-20 = 0,73). L’élément le moins difficile à observer était la lévitation du bras, tandis que l’hallucination auditive était l’élément le plus difficile. L’enquête a montré que les propriétés métriques étaient considérées comme un instrument valide et fiable pour mesurer le niveau d’hypnotisabilité dans la population chilienne.

Resumen: Una de las dificultades para evaluar la hipnotizabilidad en Chile es la limitada existencia de instrumentos validados. En este estudio, se adaptó semánticamente y validó la versión mexicana de la Escala Stanford de Susceptibilidad Hipnótica, Forma C. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo trasversal con 102 estudiantes universitarios chilenos. Tres expertos realizaron la validación de contenido y se evaluó la consistencia interna con KR-20. El grado de dificultad de los reactivos se evaluó mediante el índice de dificultad. La mayoría de los estudiantes fueron clasificados con alta hipnotizabilidad. La puntuación media obtenida fue de 7.41 (SD = 1.84). La consistencia interna fue aceptable (KR-20 = 0.73). El reactivo con el menor grado de dificultad fue el descenso del brazo, mientras que la alucinación auditiva fue el reactivo más difícil. El estudio mostró propiedades métricas con las que se puede considerar que el instrumento es válido y confiable para medir hipnotizabilidad en la población chilena.
