Feasibility of the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale–Spanish Translation

ABSTRACT

The absence of a Spanish translation of the Elkins Hypnotizability Scale (EHS) suggests access to clinical research and hypnotic interventions may be limited for those in predominantly Spanish-speaking populations. The present study aims to mitigate this disparity by providing a translation of the EHS to facilitate participation in experimental research and clinical care in Spanish-speaking communities. The EHS was translated and administered to 9 participants. No major modifications were done to the characteristics or structure of the EHS after translation. To assess feasibility, mean hypnotizability levels and self-reported levels of pleasantness and comprehension were observed and compared to the English EHS. The results provide a Spanish translation of the EHS. This study demonstrates the Spanish translation of the EHS is feasible for further research.

Zusammenfassung: Das Fehlen einer spanischen Übersetzung der Elkins Hypnotisierbarkeits Skala (EHS) legt nahe, dass der Zugang zu klinischer Forschung und hypnotischen Interventionen für überwiegend spanisch sprechende Bevölkerungsanteile eingeschränkt ist. Die vorliegende Studie hat zum Ziel, diese Ungleichheit zu verringern, indem durch eine Übersetzung der EHS der spanisch sprechenden Bevölkerung die Teilnahme an experimenteller Forschung und klinischer Versorgung erleichtern wird. Die EHS wurde übersetzt und die Testung an 9 Teilnehmern durchgeführt. Es wurden in der Übersetzung keine größeren Veränderungen an den Merkmalen oder der Struktur der EHS vorgenommen. Um die Durchführbarkeit einzuschätzen, wurden die durchschnittlichen Hypnotisierbarkeitsmaße und die selbst eingeschätzte Annehmlichkeit sowie das Verständnis erhoben und mit der englischen Version der EHS verglichen. Als Ergebnis wird eine Übersetzung der EHS ins Spanische bereitgestellt. Diese Studie zeigt, dass die Übertragung der EHS ins Spanische für weitere Forschung einsetzbar ist.

Résumé: L’absence de traduction espagnole de l’échelle d’hypnotisabilité d’Elkins (EHS) suggère que l’accès à la recherche clinique et aux interventions hypnotiques peut être limité pour les personnes appartenant à des populations majoritairement hispanophones. La présente étude vise à atténuer cette disparité en fournissant une traduction de l’EHS pour faciliter la participation à la recherche expérimentale et aux soins cliniques dans les communautés hispanophones. L’EHS a été traduit et administré à neuf participants. Aucune modification majeure n’a été apportée aux caractéristiques ou à la structure de l’EHS après traduction. Pour évaluer la faisabilité, les niveaux moyens d’hypnotisabilité et les niveaux autodéclarés d’agrément et de compréhension ont été observés et comparés à l’EHS anglais. Les résultats fournissent une traduction espagnole de l’EHS. Cette étude démontre que la traduction espagnole de l’EHS est réalisable pour des recherches ultérieures.

Resumen: La falta de traducción al español de la Escala Elkins de Hipnotizabilidad (EHS por sus siglas en Inglés) sugiere que el acceso a investigaciones clínicas e intervenciones hipnóticas puede ser limitado para personas en poblaciones predominantemente hispanohablantes. El estudio presente tiene como objetivo mitigar esta disparidad proporcionando una traducción de la EHS para facilitar la participación de comunidades hispanohablantes en investigaciones experimentales y en la atención clínica. El EHS fue traducido y administrado a 9 participantes. No se realizaron modificaciones importantes en las características o la estructura del EHS después de la traducción. Para evaluar la viabilidad, los niveles promedios de hipnotizabilidad, los niveles de placer auto informados, y la comprensión se compararon con los promedios observados en el EHS en Inglés. Los resultados incluyen una traducción al español del EHS. Este estudio demuestra que la traducción al español del EHS es factible para futuras investigaciones.
