ABSTRACT
The ability to approximate a set of data by a parametric cylinder in a general position is required in a diverse range of fields in metrology. A new technique for cylinder fitting based on the minimization of the sum of orthogonal squared distances is considered. A descent algorithm is proposed and illustrated using numerical examples.
