This Special Issue collects a total of 11 papers selected from the best presentations at the joint meeting of the International Conference on Distributed Computing and Applications in Business, Engineering and Sciences (DCABES) and the International Conference on Parallel Algorithms and Computing Environments (ICPACE) held at the University of Greenwich–Maritime Greenwich Campus, from 25 to 27 August 2005. The Special Issue is devoted to distributed algorithms in science and engineering.

These papers were selected after careful consideration of the research and the contents of the presentations at the above joint meeting. The selected presentations covered a range of areas, including software systems, computer systems, and various distributed numerical/non-numerical algorithms, fulfilling the aims and objectives of the Journal. All papers have applications in science and engineering. The papers are separated into two sections, one being Computer Systems and the other being Computational Methods, as in regular issues of the Journal.

The review process has followed closely the usual practice of International Journal of Computer Mathematics. The guest editors would like to thank the authors and the reviewers for their input to this Special Issue.
