It has been a pleasure working on the production of this special issue of the International Journal of Computer Mathematics, which contains articles contributed as part of a research meeting sponsored by the CMMSE working group held in June 2007 at the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois, USA. CMMSE is the scientific society, Computational and Mathematical Methods in Science and Engineering, with the goal of encouraging interaction between engineers, scientists and applied mathematicians.

This special issue is another in a line of CMMSE special issues:

  •  T.E. Simos and J. Vigo-Aguiar (eds.), International Conference of Computational Methods in Sciences and Engineering 2003 (ICCMSE 2003), Math. Comput. Modell. 42(7–8) (2005).

  •  ———, Selection of papers from the Conference on Computational and Mathematical Methods for Science and Engineering (CMMSE-2002), J. Comput. Appl. Math. 158(1) (2003).

  •  J. Vigo-Aguiar (ed.), Special issue on computational and mathematical methods in science and engineering (CMMSE-2004), J. Comput. Appl. Math. 192(1) (2006).

  •  J. Vigo-Aguiar and B.A. Wade (eds.), Recent advances in computational and applied mathematics in science and engineering (ICCMSE 2006), Int. J. Comput. Math. 85(3–4) (2008).

  •  ———, Special issue dedicated to Professor Erkki J. Brändas on the occasion of his 65th birthday (ICCMSE 2005), J. Math. Chem. 40(1) (2006).

The articles contained in this volume come from applied mathematicians dedicated to research progress in areas related to computational mathematics and its applications. Their contributions span areas of industrial mathematics, including modelling, simulation and analysis, applications in engineering and quantum chemistry, as well as fundamental algorithm analysis for partial differential equations and linear systems.

As guest editors, we would like to express our gratitude to Professor E.H. Twizell of Brunel University, UK, for all the excellent support.
