An algebraic proof of the maximum principle

Pages 563-571 | Received 13 May 1975, Published online: 17 Apr 2007

Abstract

A proof of the maximum principle is presented which is extremely general and, at the simple time, simple in its details and very explicit. Apart from its intrinsic merit, it is hoped that the method of proof will help simplify adaptation of the principle to novel applications and generalize existing adaptations in areas such as the distributed-parameter and stochastic system areas.
