Abstract
The paper reviews the existing conditions and challenges for water resources management in Greece. Water demand in Greece has increased tremendously over the past 30 years with irrigation rising up to 85% of the total usage. The growing demand for irrigation and drinking water supply has resulted in an intense and frequently unreasonable exploitation of water resources. It must be stressed that the non-uniform water availability distribution is much different from the demand distribution. This often results in significant water deficits particularly in the summer. On the other hand, complex and fragmented topographical relief results in small scale river basins and numerous water bodies that demand monitoring and protection from point and diffuse sources of pollution. Moreover, nearly all available technologies need to be examined with regard to the water resources management of numerous Greek islands with high touristic presence.
