État des lieux cartographiques de l’arganier Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels (Sapotaceae) en Afrique Nord-Occidentale (Algérie et Sahara Occidental)

Abstract

Occurring in a limited biogeographical region in North Western Africa, the Argan tree Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels grows in extreme ecological conditions. The aim of the present work is mapping the natural extension of the species in Tindouf (Algeria) and in the Western Sahara. Our work adopts cartographic processing by GIS (Geographic Information System). To delimit the natural distribution of the species in Tindouf in Algeria, we localized argan tree distribution by GPS (global positioning system) in 2008, 2009 and 2012. In this region, the Argan tree occupies dry river banks towards the western side of the Draa Hamada. It is found at an altitude that ranges between 254 and 634 m above sea level, spreading over a surface of 50,670 hectares. For remote areas in the south, we adopted a toponymical study in order to prove its existence in Western Sahara.

Occupant une région biogéographique limitée en Afrique Nord-Occidentale, l’arganier Argania spinosa (L.) Skeels se trouve dans une situation écologique extrême. Le présent travail a pour but de réaliser un état des lieux cartographiques de l’extension naturelle de l’espèce à Tindouf et au Sahara occidental. Pour se faire, nous avons adopté une approche cartographique basée sur le SIG (Système d’information Géographique). En Algérie, l’aire de l’arganier de Tindouf a été délimitée après un pointage de la localisation sur terrain par GPS (System de Positionnement Global) en 2008, 2009 et 2012. L’arganier dans cette région occupe les lits des oueds secs à l’ouest de la Hamada du Drâa, il se trouve sur une altitude oscillant entre 254 et 634 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, s’étendant sur une superficie de 50,670 hectares. Pour les stations éloignées du Sud, nous avons opté pour une étude toponymique, afin de prouver son existence au Sahara Occidental.
