Integrating piggeries and aquaculture in Malawi: water quality and fish production

, &
Pages 882-891 | Published online: 18 Mar 2022

ABSTRACT

The paper reports work using 12 ponds at Bunda fish farm, where three different doses of pig manure (and no-manure as a control) were applied in three replicates. Redbreast tilapia reared in ponds fertilised with the biggest dose of manure were significantly larger and had greater final weight, followed by fish in the middle treatment; the least final weight was in the control. Survival rates showed no significant differences. Significantly greater amounts of chlorophyll a and higher numbers of zooplankton were found in ponds fertilised with the high dose of manure. This demonstrates the opportunity for integrated agriculture/aquaculture systems.
