Pages 163-169 | Accepted 24 Apr 1990, Published online: 24 Feb 2007

Peat, besides being plentiful and inexpensive, possesses several characteristics that make it an effective medium for the removal of pollutants. This paper presents an overview of the use of peat in pollution control. The utilization of peat in the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters and in on‐site wastewaters systems is examined with examples from literature. The use of peat in the treatment of odours is also reviewed.
