An unreliable series production line: keeping it running with buffer stocksFootnote

Pages 607-617 | Received 16 Dec 1981, Published online: 26 Apr 2007

Abstract

This paper deals with a practical problem concerning a basic series production system with a buffer facility located between every pair of adjacent equipments which are subject to some degree of unreliability. Only theoretical developments are discussed in this work in which our main aim is to attempt to delineate the complex nature of the problem. Our models yield some explicit relationships that exist between the in-process inventory of work units on the shop floor and the unreliability of machines at work stations. A further paper will report on some practical results.
