Sabina Spielrein’s theory of the origin and development of language

ABSTRACT

In recent years, a growing acknowledgement of the importance and originality of Sabina Spielrein’s theoretical and clinical work has taken place. However, few studies have been specifically devoted to a thorough analysis of her theory, so a satisfactory understanding of her thinking has not yet been fully achieved. The objective of this article is to contribute to the understanding of Spielrein’s theory of language, based on the analysis of her two main papers on the subject, “The Origin of the Child’s Words ‘Papa’ and ‘Mama’” (1922) and “Some Analogies between the Thought of Children, Aphasia, and the Subconscious Thought” (1923). Reference is also made to some hypotheses formulated in her first works in order to clarify the assumptions of the theory of language she advances in the early 1920s. It is argued that Spielrein developed an original psychoanalytic perspective on language. She brought about an innovative contribution to the understanding of the origins and functioning of both language and thought, articulating linguistic and neurological knowledge with psychoanalytic hypotheses and her own observations.

Une reconnaissance récente et croissante de l’importance et de l’originalité des travaux théoriques et cliniques de Sabina Spielrein a eu lieu. Cependant, peu d’études ont été consacrées spécifiquement à une analyse approfondie de sa théorie, de sorte qu’une compréhension satisfaisante de sa pensée n’a pas encore été pleinement atteinte. L’objectif de cet article est de contribuer à la compréhension de sa théorie du langage sur la base de l’analyse de ses deux articles principaux à ce sujet: « L’origine des mots de l’enfant ‘Papa’ et ‘Maman’» (1922) et « Quelques analogies entre la pensée de l’enfant, celle de l’aphasique et la pensée subconsciente » (1923). Afin de clarifier ses conjectures avancées au début des années 1920 sur la théorie du langage, référence est faite aussi à celles-ci, datant de ses premiers travaux. L’article soutient que Spielrein a développé une perspective psychanalytique originale sur le langage en y apportant une contribution innovatrice à la compréhension des origines et du fonctionnement du langage et de la pensée, par l’articulation de ses connaissances linguistiques et neurologiques avec des hypothèses psychanalytiques et ses propres observations.

In den letzten Jahren hat die Bedeutung und Originalität von Sabina Spielreins theoretischer und klinischer Arbeit zunehmend Anerkennung gefunden. Es gibt jedoch bisher nur wenige Untersuchungen, die sich ausdrücklich einer gründlichen Analyse ihrer Theorie widmen, so dass ein zufriedenstellendes Verstehen ihres Denkens bisher nicht vollständig erreicht werden konnte. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, das Verstehen von Spielreins Theorie der Sprache durch eine Analyse ihrer beiden wichtigsten Schriften zum Thema zu erweitern: “Die Entstehung der kindlichen Worte ‘Papa’ und ‘Mama’” (1922) und “Einige Analogien zwischen dem Denken von Kindern, der Aphasie und dem unbewussten Denken” (1923). Der Beitrag bezieht sich außerdem auf einige Hypothesen in ihren ersten Werken, um die Annahmen ihrer Sprachtheorie näher zu erläutern, die sie in den frühen 1920er Jahren vorstellt. Der Beitrag argumentiert, dass Spielrein eine originale psychoanalytische Perspektive auf die Sprache entwickelte. Sie leistete einen innovativen Beitrag zum Verstehen der Entstehung und der Funktionsweise von Sprache und Denken und formulierte linguistisches und neurologisches Wissen anhand psychoanalytischer Hypothesen und eigener Beobachtungen.

Negli ultimi anni l’importanza e l’originalità del lavoro teorico e clinico di Sabina Spielrein sono state sempre più riconosciute. Resta tuttavia scarso il numero di studi specificamente dedicati ad analizzare nel dettaglio la sua teoria, per cui si può ben affermare che la nostra comprensione del suo pensiero non ha ancora raggiunto un livello soddisfacente. L’obiettivo del presente articolo è di contribuire alla comprensione della teoria del linguaggio della Spielrein sulla base di una lettura analitica dei suoi due principali lavori sull’argomento: “L’origine delle parole infantili ‘papà’ e ‘mamma’” (1922) e “Alcune analogie tra il pensiero del bambino, quello dell’afasico e il pensiero inconscio” (1923). Si farà comunque riferimento anche ad alcune ipotesi da lei formulate nei suoi primi scritti, in modo da chiarire i presupposti della teoria del linguaggio da lei successivamente sviluppata nei primi Anni ‘20. La conclusione qui proposta è che la Spielrein abbia sviluppato una prospettiva psicoanalitica originale sul linguaggio, offrendo un contributo innovativo per la comprensione delle origini e del funzionamento del linguaggio e del pensiero e raccordando anche le competenze che possedeva in campo linguistico e neurologico con ipotesi psicoanalitiche e con le sue stesse osservazioni.

En los últimos años hay un mayor reconocimiento de la importancia y originalidad del trabajo teórico y clínico de Sabina Spielrein. Sin embargo, hay pocos estudios dedicados específicamente a un análisis riguroso de su teoría, de manera que aún no se ha logrado una comprensión satisfactoria de su pensamiento. El objeto de este artículo es contribuir a la comprensión de la teoría del lenguaje de Spielrein, a partir del análisis de sus dos principales artículos sobre el tema: “El origen de las palabras infantiles ‘papá’ y ‘mamá’” (1922) y “Algunas analogías entre el pensamiento del niño, el del afásico y el pensamiento inconsciente” (1923). A fin de aclarar los supuestos de la teoría del lenguaje que propuso a principios de la década de 1920, también se hace referencia a algunas hipótesis formuladas en sus primeros trabajos. Se sostiene que Spielrein desarrolló una perspectiva psicoanalítica original sobre el lenguaje. Asimismo, produjo un aporte innovador a la comprensión de los orígenes del lenguaje y del funcionamiento del pensamiento, articulando un conocimiento lingüístico y neurológico con hipótesis psicoanalíticas y con sus propias observaciones.
