1 I’m referring here to “bedrock” in the broad sense of “founding principles”, not in the specific sense of two such foundations (penis envy and biology), that Freud specifically referred to as “bedrock” in an oft-cited 1937 comment. Cultural factors may, of course, influence our notions of what’s bedrock.

2 I emphasize that I am speaking here of a question that is posed to oneself, not the patient, and does not demand of the patient to change.
