The reputation and popularity of International Journal of Systems Science continues to grow apace. We now receive well over 600 new paper submissions each year, reflecting the distinctive scope of the Journal and the speed and quality of our reviewing process.

1. Paperflow

For some years now we have been successfully using a web-based submission and peer review system and, with the support of our experienced team of Associate Editors, this has enabled us to provide a streamlined service to authors, regularly meeting our target of a maximum of 90 days to reach a first decision on a submitted paper. Next year, the length of each journal issue is planned to increase by over 30% to accommodate our increased paper flow.

2. Top papers and reviewers

In recognition of the contribution that authors and reviewers make to the success of our Journal, we are launching two prizes: International Journal of Systems Science Prize Paper and International Journal of Systems Science Outstanding Reviewer.

For papers published in 2008, following an assessment of the quality and popularity of the article, we are pleased to announce that the International Journal of Systems Science Prize Paper (2008) is

Xu, S.Y. and Lam, J. (2008), ‘A Survey of Linear Matrix Inequality Techniques in Stability Analysis of Delay Systems’, International Journal of Systems Science, 39, 1095–1113.

Highly Commended Papers in this category are:

Belapurkar, R., Ohio State University, USA

Tadeo, F.,University of Valladolid, Spain

Wei, G., Donghua Univerity, China.

Congratulations to all our award winners.

3. Future developments

Following our two very successful special issues earlier this year on Dynamics Analysis of Gene Regulatory Networks and Operations Research and Management Science, we have a variety of Special Issues planned, which are either awaiting publication or are at various stages of preparation and review in areas such as

Fault diagnosis and fault control

Control of advanced automotive drive-trains

Variable structure systems methods for control and observation of hybrid systems

H-infinity control and filtering for nonlinear systems, and

Uncertainty and robustness in planning and decision making.

The scope of International Journal of Systems Science embraces emerging and exciting research themes from a variety of disciplines–engineering, computer science and life sciences. Here are some of the areas in which we especially invite papers and special issue proposals:

Autonomous systems (including humanoid robots and UAVs)

Synthetic biology

Bio-inspired systems, sensors and actuators

Dynamics of emergent systems

Cooperative control and multi-agent systems

Networked control systems

System health management and prognosis

Data mining, forecasting, modelling and decision analysis applications in management science.
