Abstract
In this paper a rule has been developed to classify failure in one of n mutually exclusive classes (each class corresponding to a unit) for an n-unit series system. The classification rule is based upon the life-time of the system and it minimizes expected loss due to misclassification. A procedure has also been suggested to examine the discriminatory power of the rule developed in this paper. A numerical example is included to illustrate the uses of the results.
