ABSTRACT

Chthamalus barnesi n. sp. is described. The morphological characteristics of this species are compared to those of other Pacific chthamalids, especially C. challengeri Hoek, 1883. The distribution of C. barnesi along the Sinai peninsula shores, the habitat and ecological requirements are discussed. It is concluded that C. barnesi can withstand sedimentation and turbidity, which probably limits its distribution in the Gulf of Elat (= Gulf of 'Aqaba); in the Gulf of Suez, where the sedimentation rate is higher, it is common. The possibility of interspecific competition between C. barnesi and Tetrachthamalus oblitteratus Newman, 1967 is discussed.
