ABSTRACT
Captive, adult Steatomys pratensis do not exhibit seasonal changes in body mass, but they do show seasonal changes in reproductive activity and an annual cycle of torpor. The breeding season commences in December (mid-summer) and continues until June or July. All individuals demonstrated torpor, but it was more evident in subadults than adults, and in females than males. These differences are ecologically adaptive traits related to life history. Cycles of torpor and reproductive activity are a co-evolved species characteristic.
