River quality investigations. Part 2: Physical, chemical, and microbial determinands of water quality

Pages 201-208 | Published online: 13 Dec 2010

Abstract

From its source to the City of Cambridge, the River Cam receives the effluent from several industrial and domestic sewage treatment works. These effluents may affect the quality of the water. This exercise gives details on methods which students from Anglia Polytechnic use to measure some significant parameters of the river. The results are used in conjunction with the biotic indexing procedures described in Part 1 of this paper (Hewitt, 1991), to form the basis of a technical report on the quality of the waters in the River Cam.
