The presentation of Equation 2a in the article contains an error. We verified that the error occurs only in the article, but not in the implementation of the simulation program with which we generated the results reported in the article.

The corrected version of equation 2a and the accompanying text reads:

“To assure that , we smooth the change of opinions when agents move towards the extreme ends of the opinion scale (Equation 2a).

(2a)

In equation 2a, the symbol refers to the “raw” state change of agent i’s opinion on issue k (see equation 2 in the article). The difference to the original article is the condition under which the two different branches of equation 2a apply. The correction is that the upper branch applies if (upwards shift of opinion) and the lower branch if (downwards shift of opinion). In the published article these conditions were erroneously given as and , respectively.

The authors apologize for any inconvenience caused. We thank Thomas Feliciani (PhD student ICS /Department of Sociology, University of Groningen) for bringing this error to our attention.
