In a recent paper on the family-group names of Arachnida first proposed in Berendt (Citation1845), I treated Sarcoptides Sundevall, Citation1833 as an unavailable name on the grounds that it was a vernacular form (Judson Citation2012, p. 1279) – an argument made earlier by Sidorchuk and Klimov (Citation2011, p. 184). However, this is clearly incorrect because Sundevall's (1833) work is written entirely in Latin, including the family names. Sarcoptidae Sundevall, Citation1833 (as first corrected by C.L. Koch in Berendt, Citation1845) and the coordinate Sarcoptoidea Sundevall, Citation1833 fulfil the criteria of Article 11.7.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature Citation1999) and are therefore valid names. Similarly, I also misinterpreted Eresides and Mithraides (published in Koch 1851) as vernacular forms (Judson Citation2012, p. 1277), although in those cases there are no nomenclatural consequences. A useful discussion of the distinction between vernacular and Latinized names is provided by Bouchard et al. (Citation2011).
When citing the work of Berendt (Citation1845) in the references (Judson Citation2012, p. 1280), I inadvertently included the words “gesammelt in Verbindung mit Mehreren bearbeitet un [sic] herausgegeben” in the title. The correct citation is given below.
