Abstract
The type-species of Collarina, C. cribrosa Jullien, 1886 (=Lepralia cribrosa Heller in the sense of Waters, 1879, not Heller, 1867), has been treated as a junior synonym of Flustra balzaci Audouin, 1826. However, type-material has not been recognized for either taxon, and their true identities have been the subject of uncertainty. A lectotype of C. cribrosa is selected here from the material examined by Waters. The same specimen is also designated as neotype of F. balzaci, which therefore becomes an objective senior synonym of C. cribrosa, confirming the traditional synonymy and usage. A redescription of the species, based on the type and other Mediterranean material, is given. On this basis, two of the main characters by which Jullien distinguished the genus Collarina are discounted. The characters of the genus are reviewed with particular reference to differences between Collarina and Puellina Jullien, 1886. The occurrence of Collarina in the NE Atlantic is discussed.
