Abstract

The subtribe Hippomelanina is revised and six genera are recognized: Hippomelas Laporte and Gory, Gyascutus LeConte, stat. nov., Prasinalia Casey, stat. nov., Barrellus Nelson and Bellamy, gen. nov., Nanularia Casey, and Ampheremus Fall. The genus Hippomelas contains eight species: H. brevipes Casey, H. martini Nelson, sp. nov., H. planicauda Casey, H. mexicanus (Laporte and Gory), H. saginatus (Mannerheim), H. aeneocupreus Kerremans, H. sphenicus (LeConte), and H. parkeri Nelson, sp. nov. The genus Prasinalia contains two species: P. cuneata (Horn), comb. nov., and P. imperialis (Barr), comb. nov. The genus Gyascutus contains two subgenera: Gyascutus LeConte, not covered in this study, and Stictocera Casey, stat. nov. that contains one species, G. (S.) caelatus (LeConte), comb. nov. The genus Barrellus contains one species, B. femoratus (Knull), comb. nov. The seven species of the genus Nanularia and one species of Ampheremus were not covered in this study. All taxa covered are described and information on variation, type localities, distribution, biology, and comparisons are given for each species. Keys to genera, subgenera, and species are provided. Illustrations for all species, including habitus, male and female genitalia, larvae of Prasinalia, Gyascutus (s.str), and Nanularia, other anatomical parts, as well as a cladogram of genera are presented. Tables of taxa, characters and character states used in the cladistic analysis are included.
