The Messy Desk Effect: How Tidiness Affects the Perception of Others

Pages 263-267 | Received 16 May 1984, Published online: 02 Jul 2010

Summary

Management students of both sexes (N = 76) at the University of Texas at Austin evaluated an absent officeholder more positively on nine personality traits if his desk was messy than if it was neat. The positive effect of a messy desk lessened with the presence of the occupant, however, and his ratings for sincerity, intelligence, ambition, warmth, and calmness improved when his desk was tidy.
