Abstract
Development of the theory and practice of acceptance sampling by variables to control the fraction defective is described in detail. The review starts with the initiating British papers on the subject and finishes with the British revision of MIL-STD-414. In between it sandwiches a concise history of the many developments in this country, portraying these against the background of the evolving attribute sampling standards. Part II of the series, by Arthur Bender, Jr., will describe the matching of new variables plans to the attribute plans of MIL-STD-105D, a program being undertaken jointly by the ASQC Task Group on Revision of MIL-STD-414 and Working Group C of ISO/TC-69.
