Abstract
We present a program in C, SYNTH, which can be used to design a synthetic control chart that minimizes the out-of-control average run length (ARL). The synthetic chart, an integration of the Shewhart X̄ and the conforming run length charts, detects shifts in the process mean, δ, but produces smaller out-of-control ARL's than the Shewhart X̄ chart and outperforms the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) chart when δ is approximately greater than 0.8σ.
