ABSTRACT
The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society carried out a two year surface survey of Tumamoc Hill, AZ AA:16:6 (ASM), and other cultural features in its vicinity. As an introduction to the papers dealing with specific aspects of the survey, we discuss the environmental setting of the sites, sketch their prehistoric and historic contexts, and then describe the organization of the survey. The significance of the survey in facilitating efforts to preserve the cultural resources on Tumamoc Hill as part of an environmental study area is also briefly discussed.
