Homol'ovi III Ground Stone in the Raw: A Study of the Local Sandstone Used to Make Ground Stone Artifacts

ABSTRACT

Studies of raw material variation and its influence on material selection, manufacture, and use of ground stone tools are often neglected in ground stone analysis. Sandstone, a material that forms a large part of many Anasazi ground stone assemblages, is particularly diverse, and even materials obtained from the same outcrop may vary significantly in physical properties and characteristics. In this preliminary study of a sample of unburned sandstone artifacts from Homol'ovi III, we document variation in the types of cement present in ground stone artifacts made of Shinarump and Moenkopi sandstone and analyze how these differences apparently influenced raw material selection and use of these lithic artifacts.
