Hohokam of the Southern Frontier: Excavations at the Continental Site, a Classic Period Village South of Tucson, Arizona

ABSTRACT

Recent excavations at the Continental Site (AZ EE:1:32 [ASM]) have provided new information on the Classic period Hohokam occupation of the middle S Mila Cruz River basin in south-central Arizona. Seven habitation structures excavated during this investigation burned catastrophically and contained intact floor assemblages including numerous storage vessels with preserved botanical materials. This article discusses the chronology, subsistence practices, and site structure and social organization of the investigated portion of the Continental Site, then compares the site to other Classic period occupations in the Santa Cruz Riva-basin.

Investigaciones recientes en el sitio Continental (AZ EE:1:32[ASM]) estan proporcionando nueva información sobre el periodo Clásico Hohokam en el valle central del Río Santa Cruz localizado en la zona sur-central de Arizona. Siete de las estructuras habitacionales excavadas durante esta investigación se quemaron catastróficamente y contiene conjuntos intactos de materiales arqueológicos en el piso incluyendo numerosas vasijas de almacenamiento que contenían materiales botánicos preservado. Este trabajo discute la cronología, las prácticas de subsistencia, la estructura de la ocupación y la organización social de la sección excavada del Sitio Continental, además compara el sitio con otras ocupaciones del periodo Clásico en Valle del Río Santa Cruz.
