Distinctive Bone Disks from Utah Valley: Evidence of Basketmaker Connections in North Central Utah

Pages 305-322 | Published online: 25 Jul 2016

ABSTRACT

The discovery of distinctive bone disks in central Utah similar to and contemporary with specimens from the Four Corners area argues for cultural connections between these regions during the Basketmaker period. Archaeologists have long debated the cultural processes that might explain the onset of farming north of the Virgin-Colorado Rivers in Utah. Although there is no dispute that maize farming derived from the Southwest, the question of whether indigenous peoples adopted ideas and seeds or Southwestemers moved north remains unresolved. While these enigmatic artifacts do not provide proof of migration, they are evidence that cultural connections resulted in the movement of social and ideological elements as well as farming techniques and products.
