Low Frequency Dielectric Response of Chiral Smectic C

Abstract

The low frequency dielectric response of SmC* is analysed within the framework of the electrodynamic continuum theory. The electric field induced distortion of the structure is calculated. The macroscopic contributions in the dielectric susceptibility are determined in fields parallel as well as normal to the helix. These contributions originate in the presence of the spontaneous polarization, the helical structure and the electromechanical effect.
