Abstract

Ferroelectric smectic liquid crystalline polymers were synthesized. They are acrylate polymers whose side chains contain a flexible spacer unit, a mesogen unit and an optically active substratate. Their liquid crystalline properties were determined by DSC analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and the observation of spontaneous polarization. The response time was as small as milliseconds.
