Lattice sums and their derivatives for surface adlayers

Abstract

A formula is given for the interaction of a multipole moment Q ^A with a plane lattice of multipoles Q ^B that is valid in the case where the separation z between Q ^A and the plane is small but not zero. This formula fills a gap between existing formulae for z = 0 and for large z. Methods for calculating derivatives of the formulae with respect to position and orientation of Q ^A are discussed.
