Abstract
An HAsO3 - radical created by gamma irradiation in a single crystal of NH4H2AsO4 has been identified by ENDOR studies at 1·5 K. In particular, the hyperfine interactions corresponding to the protons of the three O-H … O hydrogen bonds linking the radical to AsO4 3- tetrahedra are determined. One of these protons is situated in the ‘close’ position with respect to an oxygen of the radical, as indicated by the formula HAsO3 -, whereas the other two protons are in the ‘far’ positions. The isotropic parts of the ‘far’ proton interactions are found to be negative, in agreement with a mechanism of spin polarization via a partially covalent hydrogen bond; the ‘far’ protons are found to be in lateral Slater configuration, which corresponds to the defect to the antiferroelectric ordering of protons proposed by Nagamiya.
