Abstract
VH-depolarized light-scattering spectra. for liquid quinoline have been obtained for four states along the co-existence curve and for nine states at 20°C with pressures up to 1800 bar. The spectra are well described by microscopic two-variable theories formulated by various authors with the parameter k 2 η/ρΓ varying between 0·077 and 4·01. The coupling parameter R=0·64 between orientation and shear modes was found to be larger than in most other fluids studied so far and was independent of the density up to the solidification point. The shear modes are purely dissipative for pressures P < 600 bar and are propagating for P > 600 bar.
