Second dielectric virial coefficient for tetrahedral molecules

Abstract

The second dielectric virial coefficients of CH₄ and CF₄ are calculated by only taking into account the dipole-induced dipole contribution for the distortion part and the octupolar and hexadecapolar fields for the orientation part. The resulting values are consistent with experiment. The contribution of the electronic correlation and exchange effects to the collision induced polarization is discussed.
