Abstract

New results for the structure factor of nitrogen gas at 160 K are presented along with reanalysed results from earlier measurements [1]. It is found that Fourier transforming a structure factor for the low density gas with q < 4 Å-1 generates an accurate g(r) for r greater than the molecular diameter. The experimental results are transformed and comparisons are made with calculations for the site-site, Raich-Gillis and similar potentials. It is found that the data can be described reasonably well by a calculation which includes two and three molecule terms, but none of the potentials is completely successful in generating the radial distribution function through the temperature range 160–296 K.
