Abstract
General cartesian expressions for multipole moment operators have been derived. For linear molecules a relationship between tensor components is given for any multipole order. As an illustration these expressions have been applied to the calculation of the first ten moments of the first row hydrides. For high order moments our results indicate that the nuclear contributions are predominant.
