Line displacement and line width in the binary collision theory of the vibrational phase relaxation

Abstract

We present an elementary kinetic calculation of the displacement and width of a Raman line due to vibrational phase relaxation. The binary collision model is used and the relation between the two effects is stressed. The calculated values are compared with the experimental ones for gaseous (H2/H2, H2/He, H2/Ar) and liquid (H2/SF6, N2O/SF6, N2O/CCl4) systems. A repulsive potential is used.
