Abstract

Measurements of neutron scattering from nitrogen gas at 100 bar are reported. The intramolecular contribution to the differential scattering cross section has been evaluated and compared with the observations to give the difference cross section representing intermolecular contributions. The results provide an improvement over previous measurements [1] and give information on the structural second virial coefficient, B 2(Q, T) which is related to the intermolecular potential. The experimental data are compared with predictions based on several different forms that have been proposed for the intermolecular potential for nitrogen and best fits have been obtained to virial, B 2(T), and structural virial, B 2(Q, T), data for several models.

It is found that the Kihara, L-J 12–6 plus core, model give a reasonably good fit to the data. However, we have found that the best fit model, of those we have investigated, is a site-site L-J 12–6 plus point quadrupole model, although with a quadrupole moment differing by some 20 per cent from the current experimental value.
