Abstract
The two orientational order parameters Szz and Sxx-Syy have been obtained for a biaxial solute, p-xylene, in the liquid crystal solvents N-(4-ethoxybenzylidene)-4'-n-butylaniline (EBBA), ZLI 1132, which is a mixture of 4-(trans-4'-n-alkylcyclohexyl)benzonitriles and 4-(trans-4'-n-heptylcyclohexyl) benzonitrile (PCH7), and in approximately equimolar mixtures of EBBA with either ZLI 1132 or PCH7. It is found that the solute-solvent interaction parameters for the mixtures, which are derived from the order parameters, deviate strongly from values predicted by random mixing. The possible reasons for this unexpected behaviour are discussed.
