CYTOPLASMIC BACTERIA-LIKE ENDOSYMBIONTS IN EUPLOTES CRASSUS (DUJARDIN) (CILIATA HYPOTRICHIDA)

SUMMARY

Seventeen stocks of Euplotes crassus (Dujardin) (Ciliata Hypotrichida), each belonging to a complementary mating type, collected from the Somalian and the Tuscan coasts have been examined by electron microscope. Several morphologically distinguishable types of bacteria-like endosymbionts have been shown to live in the cytoplasm of E. crassus cells.

Type A endosymbionts appear to be always present in the non-autogamous cells of E. crassus. Indeed, type A was found both in the Tuscan stocks, where it is the only one present, and in the Somalian stocks where it coexists with the more numerous type B endosymbionts.

One of the two Somalian autogamous stocks contains type C, while the other has type D endosymbionts.

RIASSUNTO

Endosimbionti di tipo batterico sono stati osservati al microscopio elettronico nel citoplasma di Euplotes crassus (Dujardin) (Ciliata Hypotrichida) raccolti lungo le coste della Somalia e della Toscana. I ceppi esaminati, in totale 17, sono tra loro complementari per il «mating type», e tutti albergano endosimbionti.

Su una base puramente morfologica, si possono distinguere almeno quattro tipi di endosimbionti che pare debbano considerarsi diversamente distribuiti nei ceppi di E. crassus, in base al luogo di raccolta e al loro tipo di riproduzione sessuale.

Nel caso dei ceppi non autogamici somali due diversi tipi di endosimbionti coesistono, anche se in proporzioni diverse, nel citoplasma della cellula ospite. Solo nei ceppi killer e mate-killer esiste una stretta correlazione tra la presenza degli endosimbionti e il fenotipo dell'ospite.
