Summary
Several North American species of Stereum are grouped into four complexes. These are: the 5. striatum, the S. frustulatum, the S. ostrea, and the S. hirsutum complexes. Two varieties are recognized in the S. striatum complex and two in the S. frustulatum complex. The taxa of the other complexes are considered to be only expressions of a single species. In addition, certain Asiatic and South American species are included, along with North American species of Stereum, in a diagnostic key.
