Single-Locus, Two-Allele Basis for Inheritance of the Granular and a Downy Form of the Ringworm Fungus Arthroderma Benhamiae (= Trichophyton Mentagrophytes Var. Granulosum)

SUMMARY

Inheritance of granular (wild type) and downy (a variant) colonial forms of Arthoderma benhamiae Ajello & Cheng, 1967 [= Trichophyton mentagrophytes (Robin, 1853) Blanchard, 1896 var. granulosum Neveu-Lemaire, 1911] is governed by a single-locus, two-allele system.

Random ascospore analyses of ascospores from crosses between self-sterile strains supported previous results that incompatibility in this fungus is under single-locus, two-allele control, and indicated that the incompatibility locus is either nonlinked, or distal to the colonial morphology locus.
