Ultrastructure of Thraustochytrium Sp. Zoospores. IV. External Morphology with Notes on the Zoospores of Schizochytrium Sp.

SUMMARY

The zoospores of Thraustochytrium sp. and Schizochytrium sp. are biflagellate with the posterior whiplash flagellimi being considerably shorter than the anterior tinseled flagellum. In Thraustochytrium sp. the posterior flagellum terminates in a tuft of hairs which are approximately 3.4 mμ in diam. The posterior flagellum of Schizochytrium sp. ends in a tuft of hairs approximately 3.0 mμ in diam while the anterior flagellum ends with hairs approximately 3.6 mμ in diam. The zoospores of Thraustochtyrium sp. are covered by scales.
