Fine Structure of Plasmodesmata in a Chytrid

Pages 606-614 | Accepted 03 Oct 1973, Published online: 12 Sep 2018

SUMMARY

Plasmodesmata were found in the septa of a new species of Entophlyctis. Such structures have been reported infrequently in fungi. Numerous plasmodesmata traverse the septum which separates the developing zoosporangium from its rhizoid. A dense core passes through the center of a plasmodesma and is often continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum. It is suggested that plasmodesmata aid in the transport of absorbed nutrients from the anucleate rhizoids to the multinucleate, developing zoosporangium.
