SUMMARY
At the margin of a colony developed from one or two segments of dikaryotic hyphae of Pholiota nameko, about 80% of the 94 colonies examined seemed to be dedikaryotized into their component homokaryotic strains. By isolating hyphae near the margin of the colony and by mating tests, it was shown that the dedikaryotized neohaplonts were formed predominantly from one member of a compatible pair. Dedikaryotization takes place when only one member of the nuclear pair in the terminal or subterminal hyphal segment of a dikaryotic hypha divides several times without septum formation. Nuclei of one mating type are delimited by septum formation within one hyphal segment. The neohaplont cell develops into homokaryotic mycelium by branching and further growth.
