ABSTRACT
Two new species of Harpellales are described from the hindgut of Allocapnia spp. nymphs (Plecoptera). The new genus Capniomyces is established for the single species Capniomyces stellatus. Capniomyces stellatus is characterized as having a variable number (1-6) of very broad (2-6 μm) trichospore appendages, unlike other species of Harpellales which have a more or less fixed number of very thin, thread-like trichospore appendages. This species has been axenically cultured using techniques and media developed for the culture of Smittium spp. Simuliomyces spica is described as the second species of a genus which previously was known only from blackfly larvae. This species could not be isolated in culture. It is found in the same host species as Capniomyces stellatus and often co-inhabits the hindgut. Zygospores are described in both species. Stonefly nymphs (hosts) were collected during the 1981–1982 winter from several sites in southern Missouri, U.S.A.
